2014: A Year of Victories for CAUSE Action Fund

On a shoestring budget in the fall of 2014, CAUSE and CAUSE Action Fund staff and volunteers had conversations with over 12,000 voters in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties, identifying support from over 8,000 young, working-class and immigrant voters in the Central Coast, and getting them out to vote to win critical margins of victory in key races.

We won 16 of the 22 candidates and ballot measures we endorsed, including the historic prison reform of Prop 47, progressive election reform in Ventura, saving the city of Guadalupe from bankruptcy, defending a progressive majority on the Oxnard City Council, and supporting the close victories of Julia Brownley and Jacqui Irwin.

Our grassroots endorsement process included over 100 local community members who completed nearly 500 canvass volunteer shifts, knocking on thousands of doors in their neighborhoods to gain support for our endorsement slate and get out the vote.

Despite targeting neighborhoods with the highest poverty and lowest voter turnout in the entire region, our supporters turned out to vote in both Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties at over 10 percentage points above the county averages.  In the two cities where we ran our largest field campaigns, Oxnard and Santa Maria, our supporters came out to vote far above local turnout rates.  In Santa Maria, 58% of voters supporting our slate cast ballots compared to 41% overall turnout in our targeted precincts.  In Oxnard, 57% of our supporters voted, compared to only 36% in their neighborhoods.
